The Department of Education was founded in August 1928. It is one of the earliest educational departments among the modern higher educational institutions in China. The Department of Education has formed a solid research base with the following research institutions: Institute of Chinese and Foreign Education Modernization Studies, Associated Center for UNESCO-Asia-Pacific Program of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID), Secretariat of Global University Network for Innovation-Asia Pacific (GUNI-AP), Teaching and Research Section of Basic Theory of Education, Teaching and Research Section of History of Education, Teaching and Research Section of Comparative Education, and others. There are 23 faculty members in the Department of Education,including one of the first batch of senior experts in Zhejiang Province, two senior professors from Zhejiang University’s Humanities Faculty, three special-appointed professors and young scholars from the Ministry of Education's “Changjiang Scholars Program,” 12 professors, 6 associate professors, 5 Hundred Talents Program researchers, and 22 faculty members with doctoral degrees.

The Department of Education has a postdoctoral research station and has the right to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of education, covering History of Education, Comparative Education, and Basic Theory of Education, among which, History of Education is a national key discipline and Comparative Education is a provincial key discipline. At the undergraduate level, the major of Education is a feature specialty of the Ministry of Education.

In recent years, the Department of Education has undertaken more than 10 projects above the provincial level. More than 10 research projects have been awarded first prize at the national and provincial level. Some of the research projects have achieved the advanced level in China. Nowadays, “internationalization” is considered as a key strategy and the Department of Education actively conducts diverse international exchanges and cooperation by organizing high-level international conferences, inviting distinguished scholars to give speeches, sending teachers and students abroad to participate in academic activities.
